In an ideal world, social distancing, staying at home, and practicing good hygiene would be enough to stop the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, this is not how things have played out. As a response to the steady case numbers of COVID-19, both within the U.S. and around the globe, masks have been made mandatory in many communities.

Initially, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that only those who were sick or caring for them should wear face masks. In light of new scientific findings, which proves that face mask respirator are useful in slowing the spread of COVID-19, this statement has been overturned.

In most areas of the U.S. and Europe, face masks must be worn in public. The importance of face masks can not be stressed enough as COVID-19 has infected more than 8 million people around the world, with 400,000 of these cases resulting in death.

While wearing a face mask is by no means comfortable, it is a small act that can yield significant changes.

Homemade cloth masks can also be a good option. Health officials are suggesting that homemade masks be made with three layers of fabric, using cotton as a base.

Many individuals have taken to wearing neck gaiters over their faces instead of traditional masks. While these can be an economical option for those who own such items, they provide little protection and, in many cases, are responsible for spreading germs.
